Smartphones and tablets have become essential for music in our everyday life: we listen to music, make our own playlists, watch music videos, use tuning apps as tools, compose or play with apps in ensembles or bands, etc.<\/p>\n

Mobile phone applications as a teaching tool find themselves at the epicenter of an ongoing debate over reforms in our educational system. On one hand, these apps are regarded as a panacea for all pedagogical challenges, on the other they are shunned and banned from usage in classrooms. This growing controversy requires addressing, particularly regarding cultural goods, such as music and art. Questions concerning this matter ought to be approached by weighing the benefits of incorporating these technologies into current teaching methods.<\/p>\n

Practices of making music with apps have been well established. Along with popular artists like Bj\u00f6rk (2011) and Muse (2012), more and more musicians use apps for new forms of artistic expression.\u00a0Musical contexts are pervaded by thousands of music apps as a support, supplement or as the centre of an ongoing practice. This raises the question how artists and app developers see new perspectives by making music with apps.<\/p>\n

The international symposium “Mobile Music in the Making 2017”<\/strong> will create an exchange platform for practitioners of different contexts to discuss the new perspectives of musical and cultural education and the subject of art with mobile technologies in 2017.<\/p>\n

The goal of the conference is to establish an intensive and interdisciplinary discussion about the relation of music, education and technology.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The symposium takes place between 10th and 11th March 2017 at the Berlin University of the Arts<\/strong> and is organized by the Research Center for Mobile Music Making & App Music<\/a>. Since 2014, the Research Center for Mobile Music Making & App Music has been developing a training regarding music with apps in the cultural education within the joint project (Touch:Music) with the Federal Academy Wolfenb\u00fcttel<\/a> which is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Call for Papers<\/h2>\n

The conference will give you the possibilities to<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. discuss the subject from different angles (research, discourses, pedagogical practice or technological development), either in lectures (40 minutes) or as a poster presentation, discussion rounds can be used to introduce methods and hardware<\/li>\n
  2. app musicians, teachers or participants of the certificate course tAPP<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, as well as artists and app developers to present samples of their work.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The tender is addressed to educators and pedagogues within the cultural education who bring along experiences with projects with mobile devices and also to researchers coming from the field of music education in connection with media education as well as app musicians and app developers. Please send your applications<\/strong> with an informative title, a short abstract (800 words) and 5 keywords, either in german or english to forschungsstelle@appmusik.de<\/a> until 6<\/u><\/strong>th<\/sup><\/u><\/strong> November 2016<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n
